Today, we will start from absolute basics — just like how I teach kids in my real classes.

By the end of this lesson, you will know:

A brief history of chess
Benefits of chess for kids
How to set up a chessboard correctly
Chessboard orientation (Most important beginner rule)
Names of chess pieces
Symbols of each piece
How squares on the board are named

1. A Short History of Chess

Chess is over 1500 years old and believed to have started in India as Chaturanga.
Over centuries, it evolved in Persia, Europe, and became the modern chess we know today.

Modern chess became popular because:

• Clear rules

• Easy to learn, hard to master

• Helpful for brain development

• Loved by both kids & adults

• Played in 180+ countries

This is why chess is called:
“The Gym of the Mind.”

2. Benefits of Chess (Very Useful for Parents)

Chess helps children develop:

Brain Power

Improves focus, creativity, and memory.

Concentration

Kids learn to think ahead, sit longer, and stay calm.

Problem Solving

Every move is a new puzzle.

Decision Making

Kids learn to choose best moves under pressure.

Academic Improvement

Chess improves maths, strategy, reasoning & patience.

This is why chess is one of the best activities for young learners.

3. How to Set Up a Chessboard

A chessboard has:

• 64 squares

• 8 files (a–h)

• 8 ranks (1–8)

• 32 pieces

The golden rule:

White square must be on the bottom-right corner.

This is called board orientation.

♜ 4. How to Arrange the Pieces Correctly

Step 1: Place all pawns

• White pawns → rank 2

• Black pawns → rank 7

Step 2: Back rank pieces (White: rank 1 / Black: rank 8)

Order (from left to right):

Rook – Knight – Bishop – Queen – King – Bishop – Knight – Rook

Important rule:

Queen goes on her own color.

• White queen on white square (d1)

• Black queen on black square (d8)

5. Chess Pieces Name & Symbols

6. Understanding Square Names (Chess Coordinates)

Each square has a file (letter) + rank (number).

Examples:

• a1 → bottom-left

• e4 → center square

• h8 → top-right

• d5 → middle of board

This system is called algebraic notation.

Every professional player uses it.

Puzzle 1:

What square does the white king start on?

Puzzle 2:

Which direction do files run?
a) Up–down
b) Left–right

Puzzle 3:

Which piece stands next to the rook?

Puzzle 4:

Name the square: 4th file + 5th rank

Puzzle 5:

How many bishops start on the board?

Puzzle 6:

Write the symbol for a knight.

Puzzle 7:

Which piece stands on square d1 at the start?

Puzzle 8:

Is g1 a white square or black square?

Puzzle 9:

How many total pieces are on the board at the beginning?

Puzzle 10:

What is pawn’s point value?
