Chess Learning Curriculum
Beginner to Intermediate
Beginner Level
Learn the Basics & Love Chess
Goal: Build a strong foundation and develop interest & confidence in playing chess.
What’s included:
- Introduction to chess & board setup
- Movement of all chess pieces
- Chess notation (files, ranks, symbols, and points)
- Basic attacking and defending principles
- Check & Checkmate concepts
- Capturing loose (“hanging”) pieces
- Special moves: Castling & Pawn promotion
- Opening principles for a good start
- Checkmate patterns using all pieces (mate in 1)
- Understanding good & bad exchanges
- Double rook checkmates
- Simple tactics: Pins, Double Attacks, Skewers, etc.
- Beginner strategy & planning skills
- Introduction to playing chess online
Outcome: Kids finish this level knowing how to play complete games confidently and apply basic strategies & tactics.
Advanced Beginner
Practice to Win Games
Goal: Improve skills, solve puzzles & confidently win games
What’s included:
- Draw rules & draw scenarios
- Single-queen checkmate technique
- Tactical ideas: Deflection, Windmill, Back-rank weakness
- Mate in 2 puzzles
- Converting winning positions
- Understanding imbalances & exchanges
- Checkmate patterns & combination practice
- Intermediate tactical moves
- Tactical themes level-2 Pins, Double attack, Skewer, Double check
- Special move: En passant
- Basic endgames to win confidently
- Middlegame planning skills
- Game analysis with coach
- Puzzle training on draw patterns
Outcome: Kids become smarter decision-makers, solve puzzles better, and start winning more games in practice & online.
Intermediate Level
Path to FIDE Rating & Tournament Confidence
Goal: Prepare students for competitive chess & offline tournaments

- Tournament mindset & confidence building
- Middle-game strategies & planning
- Understanding Zugzwang & waiting moves
- Forcing move concepts
- Mate in 2 & 3 move combinations
- Study & learn from Grandmaster games
- Attacking principles vs castled king & uncastled king
- Pawn storm attack
- Pawn endgames mastery
- Core tactical level-3 training: Clearance, Deflection, Decoy
- Intermediate moves
- Opposition & key squares
- Game saving combinations
- Improving tournament performance habits
Outcome: Students develop competitive chess strength, strong tactics, endgame confidence, and ability
to perform in FIDE/offline events.
