Introduction

The opening is the first phase of a chess game.
Many beginners lose games early because they do not follow basic opening rules.

Today’s lesson explains opening fundamentals that every beginner must follow.

What is the Opening?

The opening is:
👉 The first 8–10 moves of the game.

The goal of the opening is to:

  • Develop pieces

  • Control the center

  • Prepare for the middlegame

Most Important Opening Fundamentals

Control the Center

Try to control e4, d4, e5, d5.
Central control gives more space and better piece movement.

Develop Minor Pieces First

Develop:

  • Knights

  • Bishops

Do not bring the queen out early.

Castle Early

Castling:

  • Protects the king

  • Connects the rooks

A safe king is very important.

Do Not Move the Same Piece Repeatedly

Move each piece once in the opening unless forced.

Do Not Bring the Queen Out Early

Early queen moves allow the opponent to gain tempo.

Common Beginner Opening Mistakes

  • Chasing pawns instead of development

  • Moving too many pawns

  • Delaying castling

  • Playing without a plan

Avoiding these mistakes improves your game immediately.

Golden Opening Rule

Before every opening move, ask:
👉 Does this move help development or king safety?

If not, rethink the move.
