♟️ Part of our FREE 30 Days Chess Learning Course for Beginners
Introduction
A discovered attack is one of the most powerful tactics in chess.
Many beginners miss it, even when it is right in front of them.
Today’s lesson explains what a discovered attack is, how it works, and how to use it safely, without unnecessary details.
What is a Discovered Attack?
A discovered attack happens when:
👉 One piece moves away, and
👉 Another piece behind it starts attacking an opponent piece.
The attack is “discovered” by moving the front piece.
Why Discovered Attacks Are Powerful
-
Two threats happen in one move
-
Opponent has limited responses
-
Often wins material immediately
-
Very effective against queens and kings
This tactic forces mistakes.
Common Discovered Attack Examples
-
Moving a knight to attack while a rook behind attacks the queen
-
Moving a bishop to give check while a rook attacks another piece
-
Moving a pawn to open a diagonal or file
📌 The back piece usually does the main damage.
Discovered Check (Very Important)
A discovered check happens when:
-
You move a piece
-
The king is checked by the piece behind
Discovered checks are extremely strong because:
-
The opponent must respond to check
-
Your moved piece can also attack something else
When Beginners Should Look for Discovered Attacks
-
When pieces are lined up
-
When your rook, bishop, or queen is blocked
-
When opponent king or queen is on the same line
Always check if moving a piece reveals an attack.
Common Beginner Mistakes
-
Missing discovered attacks
-
Moving the wrong piece
-
Forgetting opponent counter-attacks
-
Playing discovered attacks without support
Avoid rushing the tactic.
Golden Rule for Beginners
Before every move, ask:
👉 “If I move this piece, does something behind it start attacking?”
This habit helps you spot discovered attacks quickly.
