♟️ Part of our FREE 30 Days Chess Learning Course for Beginners
Introduction
Many beginners know the rules but do not know how to start a chess game properly.
A bad start leads to early mistakes and lost games.
Today’s lesson explains how to start a chess game correctly, step by step, in a simple way.
Step 1: Control the Center
At the start of the game:
-
Try to control the center squares
-
Central control gives space and flexibility
Common opening pawn moves:
-
e4 or d4 (for White)
-
e5 or d5 (for Black)
Step 2: Develop Minor Pieces
After the first pawn move:
-
Develop knights and bishops
-
Bring pieces toward the center
Avoid keeping pieces on the back rank for too long.
Step 3: Do Not Bring the Queen Early
Early queen moves:
-
Waste time
-
Allow opponent to attack the queen
-
Slow down development
Develop other pieces first.
Step 4: Castle Early
Castling:
-
Protects the king
-
Activates the rook
A safe king is very important in the early game.
Step 5: Connect the Rooks
After development and castling:
-
Move pieces so both rooks are connected
-
This prepares for the middlegame
Common Beginner Mistakes
-
Moving too many pawns
-
Playing without development
-
Ignoring king safety
-
Attacking too early
Avoiding these mistakes improves results immediately.
Golden Rule for Beginners
Before every opening move, ask:
👉 Does this move help development or king safety?
If not, reconsider the move.
