Day 10: Special Move – Pawn Promotion (Beginner Friendly Guide)
Introduction
Pawn promotion is one of the most powerful special moves in chess.
Many beginners lose winning games because they do not understand promotion properly.
Today, you will learn what pawn promotion is, when it happens, and how to use it correctly.
What is Pawn Promotion?
Pawn promotion happens when:
👉 A pawn reaches the last rank of the chessboard.
-
White pawn reaches 8th rank
-
Black pawn reaches 1st rank
At that moment, the pawn is promoted.
Which Piece Can a Pawn Promote To?
A pawn can be promoted to any one of the following pieces:
-
Queen
-
Rook
-
Bishop
-
Knight
📌 Most players choose Queen, because it is the strongest piece.
