Day 11: Special Move – En Passant (Simple Beginner Guide)

Introduction

En passant is one of the most confusing special moves in chess for beginners.
However, once understood, it becomes very simple.

This lesson explains what en passant is, when it is allowed, and common mistakes, without unnecessary details.

What is En Passant?

En passant is a special pawn capture.

It can happen when:

  • An opponent pawn moves two squares forward

  • It lands next to your pawn

  • Your pawn captures it as if it moved one square

When is En Passant Allowed?

En passant is legal ONLY if all conditions are met:

  • Opponent pawn moves two squares in one move

  • Pawns become side by side

  • Capture is made immediately on the very next move

📌 If you do not capture immediately, the chance is lost forever.

How En Passant Capture Works

  • Your pawn moves diagonally

  • The opponent pawn is removed from the board

  • Your pawn occupies the square passed over

Important Rules to Remember

  • Only pawns can perform en passant

  • En passant is not forced

  • It cannot be played later

  • It cannot capture any other piece

  • It works only on 5th rank for White and 4th rank for Black

  • Attempting en passant from wrong rank

Avoiding these mistakes saves games.
