👉 Today’s topic is the heart of chess:
Check and Checkmate
Understanding check & checkmate is essential because:
-
The goal of chess is checkmate
-
Every game ends with checkmate (or draw)
-
Beginners often lose games by ignoring check
Let’s learn this step by step, just like in real chess classes.
What is Check in Chess?

A check happens when:
👉 The king is under attack by an opponent’s piece.
When your king is in check:
-
You must respond immediately
-
You cannot ignore a check
-
You cannot make any other move
📌 In chess notation, check is written as “+”.
How Can a King Be in Check?
A king can be checked by:
-
Queen
-
Rook
-
Bishop
-
Knight
-
Pawn
-
King (rare but possible)
Example:
-
A rook on the same file as the king → Check
-
A bishop attacking diagonally → Check
-
A knight attacking in L-shape → Check
3 Ways to Escape from Check
When your king is in check, you have ONLY three legal options:
1️⃣ Move the King
Move the king to a safe square (not attacked).
2️⃣ Block the Check
Place a piece between the attacking piece and your king
(Only possible against rook, bishop, or queen).
3️⃣ Capture the Attacking Piece
If possible, capture the piece that is giving check.
📌 If none of these are possible → CHECKMATE.
What is Checkmate in Chess?

A checkmate happens when:
👉 The king is in check and has NO legal way to escape.
That means:

-
King cannot move
-
Check cannot be blocked
-
Attacking piece cannot be captured
➡️ The game ends immediately.
📌 In chess notation, checkmate is written as “#”.
Important Rules About Checkmate
✔ The king is never captured
✔ The game ends when checkmate is given
✔ You cannot move into check
✔ You must always respond to check
Common Beginner Mistakes
🚫 Ignoring check
🚫 Moving another piece instead of saving king
🚫 Moving king into danger
🚫 Thinking king can be captured
Avoiding these mistakes will save many games.
