Day 4: What is Attack & Capturing in Chess? – Simple Beginner’s Guide

Introduction

Welcome to Day 4 of the 30 Days Chess Learning Course.

So far:

  • Day 1: Chess basics & board

  • Day 2: How chess pieces move

  • Day 3: Chess notation

👉 Today’s topic is very important because chess is all about:

Attacking opponent pieces and capturing them correctly.

Understanding attack & capturing will help beginners:

  • Win material

  • Avoid losing pieces

  • Play confidently

  • Start thinking tactically

Let’s learn this step by step.

What is an Attack in Chess?

An attack means:

👉 One of your pieces is threatening to capture an opponent’s piece on the next move.

If a piece is attacked, it is not safe.

Example:

  • Your rook is on e1

  • Opponent’s knight is on e7

➡️ Your rook is attacking the knight.

📌 Important:
An attack does not mean a capture has happened yet — it means a capture is possible.

What is Capturing in Chess?

A capture happens when:

👉 One piece moves to a square occupied by an opponent’s piece and removes it from the board.

After capture:

  • The attacking piece stays on that square

  • The captured piece is removed permanently

How Different Pieces Capture

♙ Pawn Capture

  • Pawns capture diagonally

  • Pawns do NOT capture straight

Example:
Pawn on e4 can capture on d5 or f5

♖ Rook Capture

  • Captures straight (horizontal or vertical)

  • Cannot jump over pieces

♘ Knight Capture

  • Captures in L-shape

  • Can jump over pieces

♗ Bishop Capture

  • Captures diagonally

  • Always stays on same color

♕ Queen Capture

  • Captures like rook + bishop

  • Most powerful attacking piece

♔ King Capture

  • Captures 1 square in any direction

  • Cannot capture if the destination square is under attack

Attacked vs Defended Pieces

A piece can be:

  • Attacked

  • Defended

  • Hanging (undefended)

🔴 Hanging Piece

A piece is hanging if:

  • It is attacked

  • It is NOT defended

➡️ Hanging pieces should be captured immediately.

Good Capture vs Bad Capture

✅ Good Capture

  • You win material

  • Your piece remains safe

  • You gain advantage

❌ Bad Capture

  • You capture but lose your piece immediately

  • You fall into a trap

📌 Always ask before capturing:

“Is my piece safe after the capture?”

The Golden Rule for Beginners

Before every move, check:
1️⃣ Checks
2️⃣ Captures
3️⃣ Attacks

This habit alone improves chess instantly.

Common Beginner Mistakes

🚫 Capturing without checking defense
🚫 Ignoring opponent attacks
🚫 Leaving pieces hanging
🚫 Forgetting opponent’s next move

Avoiding these mistakes will save many games.
