Day 3: Chess Notation – Learn to Read & Write Chess Moves

Introduction

Welcome to Day 3 of the 30 Days Chess Learning Course.

In Day 1, we learned chess basics.
In Day 2, we learned how chess pieces move.

👉 Today’s topic is Chess Notation, which is the language of chess.

Chess notation helps you:

  • Read chess books

  • Understand online games

  • Follow chess videos

  • Record your own games

  • Learn from mistakes

  • Improve faster

Every serious chess player — beginner or advanced — uses chess notation.

What is Chess Notation?

Chess notation is a system used to write and read chess moves.

Instead of saying:
❌ “The knight moved from here to there”

We write:
Nf3

This system is called Algebraic Chess Notation.

Chessboard Coordinates (Quick Revision)

The chessboard has:

  • Files: a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h

  • Ranks: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

Each square is named by:

File + Rank

Examples:

  • a1

  • e4

  • d5

  • h8

This is the foundation of chess notation.

How to Write Simple Chess Moves

Pawn Move

Captures in Chess Notation

When a piece captures another piece, we use x.

Examples:

  • Pawn captures on d5 → exd5

  • Knight captures on e5 → Nxe5

  • Bishop captures on f7 → Bxf7

Check & Checkmate Symbols

  • + → Check

  • # → Checkmate

Examples:

  • Queen gives check → Qh5+

  • Rook gives checkmate → Rh8#

Castling Notation

  • Kingside CastlingO-O

  • Queenside CastlingO-O-O

Very simple and easy to remember.

Special Pawn Notation

Pawn Promotion

When a pawn promotes:

  • e8=Q (pawn promotes to queen)

  • e8=N (under-promotion to knight)
