👉 Today’s lesson focuses on DEFENSE.
Knowing how to escape from check and attack is essential because:
-
You cannot ignore check
-
Poor defense loses games quickly
-
Good defense saves lost positions
This lesson explains only the essential rules, clearly and simply.
What Does “In Check” Mean?
A king is in check when:
👉 An opponent’s piece is attacking the king.
📌 When your king is in check:
-
You must respond immediately
-
You cannot play any other move
ONLY 3 Ways to Escape from Check
There are exactly three legal ways to escape check.
1️⃣ Move the King
You can move the king:
-
To any safe square
-
A square not attacked by an opponent’s piece
📌 You cannot move:
-
Into check
-
Next to the opponent’s king
2️⃣ Capture the Attacking Piece
If possible, you can:
-
Capture the piece that is giving check
📌 This is legal only if:
-
The capturing piece remains safe
-
The king is no longer in check
3️⃣ Block the Check
You can block the check by:
-
Placing a piece between the attacker and the king
📌 This works only against:
-
Rook
-
Bishop
-
Queen
❌ You cannot block:
-
Knight checks
- Pawn checks
What Is NOT Allowed When in Check?
🚫 Ignoring the check
🚫 Moving another piece without saving the king
🚫 Moving the king into danger
🚫 Blocking a knight check
Any such move is illegal.
How to Escape from an Attack (Not Check)
An attack means:
👉 A piece is threatened but the king is safe.
In this case, you have multiple defensive options.
Common Ways to Defend an Attacked Piece
✔ Move the Piece
Move the attacked piece to a safe square.
✔ Defend the Piece
Protect the piece with another piece.
✔ Capture the Attacking Piece
If safe, capture the attacker.
✔ Counterattack
Create a bigger threat so the opponent must respond.
✔ Ignore (Sometimes)
If your attack is stronger, you may ignore a threat.

“What happens after my opponent’s next move?”
