Introduction
Welcome to Day 7 of the 30 Days Chess Learning Course.
In Day 6, you learned basic checkmate in 1 move with all pieces.
👉 Today, we take it one level higher.
This lesson focuses on ADVANCED checkmate-in-one patterns that:
-
Appear frequently in real games
-
Are slightly hidden
-
Are often missed by beginners
-
Win games instantly if spotted
Learning these patterns will dramatically improve your tactical vision.
What Makes a Checkmate “Advanced”?
An advanced checkmate in 1 usually includes:
-
Limited king space
-
Use of opponent’s pieces as blockers
-
Back-rank weaknesses
-
Discovered lines
-
Quiet but deadly moves
The key difference:
The checkmate is not obvious at first glance.
♕ Advanced Queen Checkmate Patterns
1️⃣ Back-Rank Queen Mate

-
Opponent king trapped by its own pawns
-
Queen delivers check on the back rank
📌 Very common in beginner & intermediate games.
2️⃣ Queen + Protected Square Mate

-
Queen gives check
-
Escape squares already controlled by another piece
📌 Always look at king’s escape squares first.

📌 This happens in endgames, not openings.
How to Spot Advanced Checkmate in 1 (Very Important)
Before every move, ask:
1️⃣ Is the enemy king trapped?
2️⃣ What squares can the king escape to?
3️⃣ Can I give a forcing check?
4️⃣ Is any checking move actually mate?
This thinking habit wins games.
Common Beginner Mistakes
🚫 Looking only for captures
🚫 Ignoring quiet checkmates
🚫 Missing back-rank mates
🚫 Forgetting pawn & knight checkmates
